Preventing type 2 diabetes
Lifestyle has a major impact on the prevention, treatment and even reversal of type 2 diabetes. That is why the Colruyt Group Academy, Bio-Planet, Jims, Yoboo and the Diabetes Liga have joined forces to shine the spotlight on the disease and help our customers make more informed choices.
What is type 2 diabetes and how do we address it?
People with type 2 diabetes do not produce enough insulin or their body no longer responds properly to the insulin produced. This leads to an elevated blood sugar level because there is too much sugar in the blood. Because the risk of developing type 2 diabetes is higher in people who do not get enough physical activity, are overweight or eat an unhealthy diet, the first treatment is to live a healthy lifestyle. The approach to treating type 1 diabetes is different because the body no longer produces insulin as a result of an autoimmune response. Those with type 1 diabetes regulate their blood sugar level using insulin shots or an insulin pump.
Why is it important to address type 2 diabetes? The figures for Belgium, which can be seen in this film produced by the Diabetes Liga, speak for themselves:
- 1 in 10 adults has some form of diabetes
- 5% has prediabetes
- 1 in 3 is not aware of the condition
As a retailer, we believe we can help customers make more informed choices. Our wide range of brands also facilitates this in various ways. How? Below are a few of our initiatives aimed at promoting a healthier lifestyle.
